In the book The Columbia History of the World (ISBN 0-88029-004-8), it wrote, "Nine-tenths of the Chinese characters have been constructed by the phonetic method. Unfortunately, the phonetics were often borrowed for other than exact homophones. In such cases, the gaps have widened through the evolution of the language, until today characters may have utterly different pronunciations even though they share the same phonetic." (page 112)

Columbia's statements are, of course, wrong. 灌 、 觀 、 權 、 勸 are not phonetic loan ( 形 聲 ) words. The sense determinator ( 會 意 ) words are also having sound tags. For a single word, it is sometime hard to know whether it is a phonetic loan word or not. Yet, it becomes very obvious when we see it in its word group. The followings are the golden rules.

• If the shared radical (module) is silent, this is a phonetic loan word group, such as, 鰻 、 鱔 、 鰱 . The shared radical 魚 is silent. So, they are phonetic loan words.
• If the shared radical (module) is not silent, this is a sense determinator word group, such as 灌 、 觀 、 權 、 勸 . Although they share the same sound tag 雚 , their sounds do change according to the ways of their meaning being inferred. In this example of 雚 (a water bird) :
  • Inference one -- 罐 is an item related to 雚 . 灌 is an act about 罐 .
  • Inference two -- 觀 is an act of 雚 .
  • Inference three -- 權 is a state or power of 雚 . When the water bird is on trees, it is no longer the workhorse of the fish man. It is a power for the bird.
  • Inference four -- 勸 is fish man's act, to force the bird to work.
  When the sound of a sound tag changes, it signifies that the way of inference has changed. That is, the sound of a word signifies that how the meaning of a word should be read.
